:: Providence Orthodox Presbyterian Church stands in that stream of Christian tradition known as Reformed. Grounded in Scripture, and tracing our roots to the Protestant Reformation, we seek to be a Church “reformed, and always reforming, according to the Word of God.” |
| :: What We Believe about Community
In Christ, God raises up his creation and he creates a new humanity. This new humanity is the people of God, the community of Christ, the church. The prophets in the Old Testament spoke of the new people of God. In the book of Ezekiel, there is a graphic vision of a pile of dead bones in a valley. The prophet watches the Spirit of God blow over these bones and make them rattle together, grow skin, and come to life. From the old people, a new people is formed. Read More |

:: What We Believe about Worship Preaching of the word and the Lord's Supper are the two central components of the church's worship. Early in the history of the church, there were two separate services: the service of the reading and preaching of scripture, and the celebration of communion. The service of the word was an adaptation of the synagogue service, while the celebration of the meal came from the supper Jesus celebrated with his disciples. We can see something of the beginnings of these two services in the New Testament writings themselves. At the end of the Gospel of Luke, after Jesus' resurrection, it is said that Jesus appeared to his disciples and interpreted the scriptures to them, and then later, he sat at table with them and "took the bread and blessed, and broke it and gave it to them" (Luke 24:30). It wasn't long before these two services became one service of worship. The liturgies that developed in the church were structured around the service of preaching and the celebration of the table. :: What We Believe about Christian Vocation We all have different work to do. Yet, no matter what our particular calling is, we share in the general vocation of Christ. We Christians have been placed in the service of Christ. He has taken us into his life and work. The general vocation to which we are called is to bear witness with Jesus Christ to God's salvation. We bear witness to Christ in word and deed; proclaiming the release of captives, the recovery of sight for the blind, the rescue of the oppressed, the favor of the Lord. We call all people to repentance for the forgiveness of sins in his name. We summon the world to faith in Christ. We proclaim the bearing away of sin which he has accomplished. We oppose the forces of evil and injustice. Continue |
